Mitchell (b. 1976) received a Master of Philosophy with Honours from Auckland University of Technology in 2012, preceded by a Bachelor of Visual Arts in Sculpture and an exchange with Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh. Mitchell was the winner of the Waikato Art Award in 2009 for Collateral, an artwork resembling a pile of rubbish, which sparked controversy in mainstream media. He held the DAAD Fellowship in Berlin and has exhibited in solo shows at the Auckland Art Gallery and Govett-Brewster Art Gallery. His work is concerned with liminal space between art and the everyday, and the “vaporous” – experience of the intangible, in a conceptual and non-medium-specific practice. Mitchell currently works between Auckland and Berlin.
