The Artist

Mcfarlane (b.1935) studied at School of Fine Arts, University of Christchurch between 1954-57, and went on to teach at Christchurch Teachers’ College before being appointed Director of the Robert McDougall Art Gallery (later renamed Christchurch Art Gallery). Mcfarlane influenced abstraction and modernist practice within New Zealand and is well-known for his formalist marine paintings.
