O’Sullivan (b.1949, Palmerston North) is an abstract painter who studied at the University Of Canterbury School Of Fine Arts; his teachers and peers included Don Peebles, Bill Sutton and Philip Clairmont. Whilst living in Auckland, O’Sullivan founded Directions in Art Theory and Aesthetics (DATA) with Ron Left, Milan Mrkusich, Stephen Bambury, and Geoff Thornley.
