Emily has lived and worked in Auckland since she was born here in 1952. Karaka is a self-taught artist, and has exhibited since 1980 with artists such as Colin MacCahon, Allen Maddox and Ralph Hotere. Her bright and layered paintings are reflective of political and environmental issues, expressing her role as a Maori activist. She has Ngia Tai, Waiohua and Ngati Hine Ngapuhi lineage.
