Born in England in 1924, Johns established himself as a photographer. After World War II he moved to New Zealand where his skills were discovered. He was appointed official photographer to the New Zealand Forest Service in 1954. Although he was never formally trained, his passion allowed for him to be noted by Art Historians as a great modernist photographer.
