Allen is of Native American descent. She received her MFA from the University of New Mexico and has held two Fulbright scholarships, one to the USSR in 1990 and another to Jordan in 2004-5. Allen is currently Director of the School of Visual Arts and Professor of Art at Boston University. Her work references her Native American lineage, as well as contested spaces, postcolonialism, the public and the historical.
