After working as an Assistant Editor for the Evening Post in Wellington, Armstrong moved on to study textiles in Nelson. She then became affiliated with the University when she studied at Elam, where she graduated with a major in Sculpture. Her first solo exhibition was at Artspace in 2005. Armstrong received several awards and residencies, including the McCahon House Residency in Titirangi.
