The Artist

Newby (b. 1979, Auckland) studied at Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland, gaining her BFA in 2001 followed by an MFA (1st class Honours) in 2007, and subsequently entered the Doctorate program in 2010. Throughout this period, Newby developed a strong exhibition history both in New Zealand and overseas, notably with a solo show at GAK Gesellschaft fur Aktuelle Kunst, Bremen. Newby also embarked upon residencies at SOMA, Mexico City; Kunstlerhauser, Worpswede; and Fogo Island Arts Corporation Residency, Newfoundland. Newby was nominated in 2012 for the Walters Prize at Auckland Art Gallery Toi O Tamaki, along with several peers who were also frequent exhibitors at the artist-run space Gambia Castle; Newby ultimately won the award for a re-presentation of Crawl out your window (GAK, 2010). Newby’s work involves site-responsive multimodal sculptural installation, concerned with affective environments and the quotidian, and frequently spills from the gallery into gentle external interventions.
