Arps (b. 1976, Christchurch) studied at Elam School of Fine Arts, graduating with an MFA in 2006 and a DocFA in 2014. He has exhibited widely throughout New Zealand and overseas. His work is sculpture- and installation-based, conceptually driven with particular attention to schizophrenic subjectivities. Arps was recipient of the McCahon House Residency in 2014 and won the Walters Prize in 2010 for his installation Explaining Things, informed by James Joyce’s Ulysses and theories of Gesamtkunstwerk.
